Comprehensive Assessment of Reading Strategies (CARS Plus series) is a diagnostic reading series that allows you to identify and assess a student's level of mastery for each of 12 reading strategies (8 strategies in Book A, 6 strategies in Books P and AA). The CARS Plus series helps teachers place students in Strategies to Achieve Reading Success (STARS Plus Series) for reading instruction and remediation. The STARS Plus Series provides precise instruction in and practice with the strategies students need to master in order to achieve reading success. This ten-level program is designed for students in years P to 8. These new, updated editions expand on the research-proven success of the earlier series to make boosting your students' reading comprehension with targeted instruction in the core strategies even easier.

Each of the new CARS Plus Student Books contains fifteen separate tests for each level from P-H. Each of the 15 tests provides a reading passage and 12 selected-response questions in Books B-H, 8 selected-response questions in Book A and 6 selected-response questions in Books P and AA. The reading passages showcase a variety of literary genres. Each question focuses on a specific reading strategy. All of these tests assess the same strategies. The CARS Plus student books also includes two self-assessments and three answer forms. Students complete Self-assessment 1 after completing all 5 Pretests and Self-assessment 2 after completing all 5 Post Tests. Students use the Answer Forms to record their answers for each Pretest, Benchmark and Post Test.

Each STARS Plus Student Book contains strategy lessons, one lesson for each reading strategy. Each lesson provides instruction and practice in the targeted reading strategy. Students read several passages and answer strategy-based selected-response (multiple-choice) questions. The strategy lessons are scaffolded, providing a gradual release of support. Each lesson moves from modelled instruction to guided instruction to modelled practice to guided practice to independent practice. A review lesson follows every two strategy lessons. A four-part final review lesson gives a review of the entire book.

Each CARS Plus Teacher Guide contains: Suggestions and instructions for using CARS effectively in the classroom;
A summary of the research that supports the CARS Plus Series; A four-page reproducible that outlines the strategies and can be used with students as a skill-review summary, or to reinforce the strategies practised in the student book; Teacher Assessments that teachers fill out after students have completed all 5 Pretests and then again after all 5 Post Tests; A reproducible Class Performance Chart for recording class results for the Pretests and Post Tests; and Completed Answer Forms that teachers can use to easily correct the tests.

Each STARS Plus Teacher Guide opens with an overview of the series as a whole, including: information about using CARS and STARS; a suggested pacing chart for using the series with your students; an introduction focusing on specific elements of STARS Plus lessons; a summary of the research behind the series; and Reproducible Strategy Bookmarks that point out the strategies used in each specific level. The in-depth Lesson Plans are the heart of each STARS Plus Teacher Guide. These are guides for each of the STARS Plus student-book lessons that include a facsimile of every student book page, containing the correct answers as well as teacher tips. Each Lesson Plan also includes some of these special features:
ELL Support; Genre Focus; Teacher's Corner; Reteaching; and Connecting with Literature, all designed to broaden and enhance the specific instruction being given in that lesson. Finally, the STARS Plus Teacher Guides conclude with a reproducible version of the answer form that students can use to record their answers for each lesson, and a completed answer form for the use of the teacher.
